On Quiet Forms: Where Arlow Began

How one question, and forty drawings of a single chair, became the collection that defined Arlow.

Elin Marsh

Founder & Lead Designer

Every studio has a first question. Ours was simple, and it took us almost two years to answer: what does a piece of furniture look like when it stops trying to be noticed?

Collection 01, Quiet Forms, is that answer. Three pieces, one table, one chair, one bench, each made to sit calmly in a room and let everything around it breathe.

A wooden chair on a soft rug in natural light

It started with a chair

The Alder Chair came first. We drew it more than forty times. Each version lost something: a curve that was only there to look good, a rail that did not need to exist, a few millimetres of height that made the seat feel formal instead of welcoming.

What was left is a chair where every line has a job. The seat sits a little lower than most dining chairs, and the back leans just enough to make you stay for another cup of coffee.

Nothing is decorative. Everything is doing something.

Then a table to hold it

The Soren Dining Table was designed around the chair, not the other way round. We wanted a table that could carry a long Sunday lunch for eight and still look peaceful on a Tuesday with nothing on it.

The legs are set in from the corners, so there is always room for one more chair. The edges are bevelled and soft, so leaning on it after a meal feels natural.

And a bench for everything else

The Vale Bench closed the collection. It is the most adaptable piece we make: at the end of a bed, in a hallway for putting on shoes, or pulled up to the Soren when guests outnumber chairs.

Why quiet matters

Most homes are loud enough already. Screens, notifications, things bought on impulse and never quite loved. Quiet Forms is our small push in the other direction:

  • Fewer lines, so the eye can rest

  • Honest materials, left to show their grain

  • Soft edges, made for hands and everyday use

  • Proportions that work, in a small flat or a large family home

It is the collection that defined how we work. Every piece we have made since carries a little of it.
